Whether a novice or a seasoned art enthusiast, this class will improve your ability to approach a contemporary work of art and formulate a reasoned opinion on its meaning, quality, and historical significance. In this three-part course, students of all levels will be equipped with the critical tools necessary for understanding and talking about contemporary art.
Course Outline
Session 1 (26 Jun 2016): The Evolution of Art
Our first session will summarize the ways in which art has evolved over the millennia, from cave paintings up to digital media. By attempting to discover artists’s motivations, we will reach a deeper understanding of why art has become what it is today.
Session 2 (03 Jul 2016): The Art of Right Now
In our second session we will focus on the many diverse practices that are considered to be “art” today. By analyzing important works from the past twenty years together as a group, we will become familiar with the main methods and criteria for evaluating a contemporary work of art.
Session 3 (10 Jul 2016): Art in Context: Dislocate by Bui Cong Khanh
For our final session we will turn The Factory into our own critical laboratory, using the skills we acquired in the first two sessions to analyze the art of Bùi Công Khánh and his solo exhibition: Dislocate. After investigating the artist’s career and related works, we will move into the exhibition space to discuss the work on display.
*We have translator in Vietnamese for every course.
