Both artist/curator Trần Lương (b. 1960) and artist Phạm Trần Việt Nam (b.1985), graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Art, but graduated during two completely different socio-political contexts. Interestingly, there seems to be no generation gap felt between them. Rather, the difference in social background has helped shape a critical interaction between curator and artist, between senior and junior. At this discussion, we will hear Trần Lương and Phạm Trần Việt Nam’s candid perspectives concerning their artistic practices, their views on ‘boundary breaking’ in contemporary art, which is shown in Phạm Trần Việt Nam’s solo exhibition ‘The Oration Of Ten Types Of Sentient Beings‘ which opened May 20 at The Factory. What makes these works prominent in the history of Vietnamese art? Does the research, discourse or artist’s wild instincts make up the identity of his art works?
Come and listen to their conversation, not just between curator and artist but also as two friends of different age who have maintained their close friendship for more than a decade.
