Tuam Khaab (Khang A Tủa)

b. 1994, Ho Chi Minh City

Tuam Khaab was born into a Hmong family in Che Cu Nha, Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai province. While a sophomore at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, because of his love for community work, Tuam dropped out of college to contribute to the founding and leadership of ‘Action for Hmong Development (AHD)’, a group consisting of 12 Hmong students passionate in the promotion and preservation of Hmong culture. In 2016-2017, along with AHD, Tuam coordinated various cultural projects such as ‘Bringing Hmong Tết to the city’ (in response to the tentative policy of incorporating Hmong Tet into Lunar New Year); ‘Stories around the fireplace’ (a project of archiving and revitalizing Hmong folk tales); ‘Our Stories’ (a project giving digital devices for Hmong children to record their own daily activities and stories); while also organizing various talks, workshops and debates on a range of cultural issues. Currently Tuam is studying at Fulbright University Vietnam (HCMC) and coordinating two projects — ‘Ná Nả: Other season, other goods’ and ‘Vuon Mo Project’.
