How does the experience of being born in Cambodia, growing up in Vietnam and residing in the UK inspire the thinking and craftsmanship of a filmmaker? Internationally-acclaimed director Hong Khaou (nominated for Best Debut Director at the 2014 British Independent Film Award, and for Outstand Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer in the 2015 BAFTA) joins us to unpack this question, as reflected in both his debut feature ‘Lilting’ (starring Ben Whishaw and Cheng Pei Pei, winning the Best Cinematography Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival) and in his second feature ‘Monsoon’ (staring Henry Golding as a British Vietnamese man returning to his birth country for the first time in nearly 30 years, currently in production in Vietnam).
