In Vietnam, performance art emerged in the second half of the 1990’s and developed quickly as an important medium, especially in Hanoi. Performance art, due to its direct impulses, ephemeral and spontaneous nature presented an opportunity for expressing personal opinion of social issue, as well as critical commentary on the claustrophobic, outdated and highly politicised system of art. Hoàng Minh Đức is known primarily as a performance artist in Vietnam through both his individual and collective practice with The Appendix (a performance collective initially comprising of 6 artists).
This screening introduces some of Hoàng Minh Đức’s previous works and opens up a discussion with the artist on the use of props and repetitive rhythms, spatial composition as well as local references. It is held in association with the exhibition ‘Domestic Bliss‘ – the second edition of our program ‘Pollination‘ which takes place at ILHAM Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
