Instructor: Thy Nguyễn
Date & Time: 10 AM – 1 PM, 20 September 2020
Location: The Factory, 15 Nguyễn Ư Dĩ, Thảo Điền Ward, District 2, HCMC
Language: Vietnamese

Accompanying Thy Nguyễn’s solo exhibition ‘Other Futures’, this printmaking workshop hopes to shed light on the ‘behind-the-scene’ of Thy’s practice, as well as providing an opportunity for participants to produce their own prints!

Consisting of various repetitive and labour intensive steps towards the production of the final artwork, printmaking is often thought to be a ‘mechanical’ artform. However, since the printing process is done entirely by hand, the smallest changes (in colors, choice of ink or amount of force the hands apply, to name but a few) could lead to unpredictable results. It is precisely these unknown possibilities – or rather, moments of imaginative chance encounters – that Thy Nguyễn aspires to explore in his works.

Participating in the workshop, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Gain a step-by-step instruction on how to make a screen printing product
  • Learn to create a handbound artbook from your own prints.
  • All supplies provided by The Factory

Thy Nguyễn (b.1992, HCMC), born and raised in Saigon and a graduate from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts with a major in Graphic Design in 2017, Thy Nguyễn uses printmaking as his dominant artistic medium. For Thy, printmaking is both a way to explore the different aspects of life, a creative means of visualizing particular perceptual phenomena. Select exhibitions include: the ‘5th Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition’, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok (2019); the ‘2nd International Print Biennale Yerevan’, KulturDialog Armenien, Yerevan (2019); the ‘International Graphic Art Festival UNI Graphica’, Kovalenko Art Museum, Krasnodar (2019); the ‘3rd International Biennale of Miniature Art’, Mansarda Gallery, Timisoara (2018) etc.
