A FOCUS ON SCULPTURE

Artists: Thảo Nguyên Phan, Richard Streitmatter-Trần, Lê Hiền Minh
Curators: Bill Nguyễn, Lê Thuận Uyên, Vân Đỗ
Exhibition dates: 12 March – 13 June 2021

This exhibition shall introduce three discrete sculptural works of the aforementioned artists, whose interdisciplinary influences are of unique and significant impact on their concepts and forms. A key curatorial intention of this exhibition is to reveal the impact of interdisciplinarity on creativity, to be reflected in the desired display of contextual material that hints at what these artists look at, and think about, in the process of developing their art.

Thảo Nguyên Phan takes inspiration from the stone geometric sculptures of the Vietnamese modernist artist Điềm Phùng Thị, in addition to referencing oral and archival history and literature; Lê Hiền Minh has grappled with the notion of femininity while expanding the possibility of Dó paper as a sculptural medium; and Richard-Streitmatter Trần focuses on the investigation of materials as informed by history of art, and on how the characteristic of each material guide the determination of the artwork final form and meaning. However diverse in terms of medium, concept and form, these artists will take us behind-the-scenes of their art-making, opening myriad alternative ways for interpreting.what sculpture can mean today.

This exhibition is conceived as an educative platform for our local audiences to better understand the impact of ‘inspiration’ on an artistic practice, to encourage the interdisciplinary study of comparative ideas of culture – a practice not present within current tertiary curricula in Vietnam.
