He completed his studies at Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1996 and has become one of the most active contemporary artists in Vietnam today. His works usually pick one or several of the following media: painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, video and digital photography and are deeply concerned with the human conditions, the relations that might exist between one’s inner and outside worlds. Hoang’s notable recent exhibitions include the two-person exhibition Between two mysteries at Galerie Quynh, Vietnam (2016) and group exhibitions such as SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now at The National Art Center, Japan (2017); Eagles Fly, Sheep Flock: Biographical Imprints – Artistic Practices in Southeast Asia, Singapore (2015); Vietnam Now: Changing Society at Canvas International Art, The Netherlands (2014). In addition, Hoang also participates in collaborative projects such as Camamoto (from 2009 with conceptual artist Takayuki Yamamoto); Rokovoko; the 1st Singapore Biennale; and Ạart Magazine (from 2006 with artist collective Morgas Station). He is the co-founder of the visual experiment publication XEM.
