  • This event has passed.
Speakers: Bill Nguyễn
Date: 14 October 2017
Time: 2PM-4PM

What? Who? Why? Where? When? How? Ever asked these questions when visiting our exhibitions? Or wondered what the art on view is all about? How do these artists go from ideas to finished artwork? Or why are art spaces organizing such exhibitions? Join a special art tour with one of our curators, Bill Nguyễn, to learn more about the two exhibitions currently on view –  a group exhibition ‘Spirit of Friendship’ and a solo show by Hoàng Thanh Vĩnh Phong, called  ‘Lost Paradise’.

Spirit Of Friendship’ seeks to highlight the role and contribution of artist friendships in furthering the development of experimental languages in Vietnam, since 1975. As an educational display, the first of its kind in Vietnam, it gives recognition to how ‘friendship’ continues to further the testing and encouraging of ideas among artists, beyond what was officially understood, taught, or predominantly exhibited in Vietnam at that time, believing their art worthy of more than catering to ideological/formal and touristic (commercial) demand.

Paradise Lost’, a solo exhibition by Hoàng Thanh Vĩnh Phong (b. 1971) invites us into a world where the familiar is made strange, the mundane mythologized and the symbolic re-arranged. Through the shifting of shape and twisting of material, images and objects from the everyday are taken out of context, heightened with a sense of ambiguity, asking us to look beyond what our first glance has to offer. Here, the fictions become a critique of their lived environment, inviting us to examine the ways we see and understand our own version of reality.
