About ‘The Glass Box’

‘The Glass Box’ is a private VIP program, initiated by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, seeking members with a keen fascination for contemporary art, who are interested in knowing more about how to collect and support the production and showcase of art in Vietnam. This program begins in early October 2017, featuring a range of special displays featuring modern and contemporary Vietnamese art, guest lectures on the latest international art market trends, in addition to select artist talks, studio visits and private previews of all shows hosted and organized by The Factory.


This series of exclusive and private programs will nurture understanding and awareness of the relationship between modern and contemporary artistic production, via curated showcases of rare exemplary Vietnamese artwork, in a specific gallery space inside The Factory (open by appointment only). The aim of ‘The Glass Box’ is to build an active network of support for Vietnamese art at The Factory*, founded on a private membership of art lovers, art collectors, cultural entrepreneurs and educational expertise that recognizes the value of art and culture as an innovative tool for social and economic growth in Vietnam.


‘The Glass Box’ is initiated by The Factory Contemporary Art Centre, co-organized with ‘Art Agenda, S.E.A’. All artwork included in this program is available for sale (unless otherwise stated).


* The long-term goal of ‘The Glass Box’ program is to showcase international works of art in dialog with Vietnamese artistic production.


‘The Glass Box’ series of Editions will change on a rotational basis. Each Edition will be accompanied by specific intimate gatherings aimed to further understanding between modern and contemporary art practice, with the view to better network support for the arts within our local community in Ho Chi Minh City. Where possible we will invite relevant local and international expertise to share their knowledge, offering rare access to industry, market and exhibition concerns of contemporary art (with particular initial focus on Vietnam and Southeast Asia).


Members of the ‘The Glass Box’ program pay an annual fee (the first ‘Glass Box’ event you attend is free). This fee assists associated costs of staging each Edition, VIP events and administration of sustaining this development program. It is hoped that a strata of membership will, in the long-term, aid the creation of VIP tours of specific art events abroad (ie. organized tours with VIP access to Art Basel Hong Kong; M+, Hong Kong; National Gallery of Singapore as example).


The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre operates as a ‘social enterprise’ business, whereby all profit from sale of art, food and beverage on the property goes towards the sustainability of its Art Centre. As the first initiative of its kind in Vietnam (in addition to being the first purpose-built space for contemporary art in the country), it is critical that our community are made aware of the exciting role they could play as supporters of our work.

How do I become a member?

Membership to ‘The Glass Box’ is free for the first event you attend. An annual membership fee consequently applies.

For an annual membership fee of USD1200, benefits include:

  • Free entry to The Factory’s Arts Centre

  • A complementary copy of each exhibition catalog, published by The Factory, during membership period
  • Priority admission to The Glass Box VIP programming (guest talks, tours, seminars)

  • 10% discount off artwork purchase from The Factory’s Art Centre exhibition program

‘The Glass Box’ is curated (and co-organized) by:  

Wang Zineng (Art Agenda, S.E.A.)

One of the key market makers for Southeast Asian art, Wang Zineng led the curation and sale of Southeast Asian art at Christie’s from 2011 to 2016 before founding Art Agenda, S.E.A.. During his time at Christie’s, Zineng established numerous record prices for Southeast Asian artists and the largest ever auction sale total for Southeast Asian art in 2015. He also expanded the geographical footprint of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian art at auction beyond Singapore and Hong Kong to salerooms in New York and Shanghai, and was the principal driver behind private sales of Southeast Asian art at Christie’s. Zineng previously worked as an independent curator and managed collections acquisition at the National Gallery, Singapore. He has also curated exhibitions of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artists at the Singapore Art Museum and the National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum. 


Art Agenda, S.E.A. is an art agency founded by Wang Zineng focused on defining and realising tomorrow’s agenda for art in Southeast Asia today. It is committed to creating positive agendas for art in Southeast Asia, while being highly responsive and involved in contemporaneous developments in the Asian art scenes today. Situated in Singapore, but with a wider regional and pan-Asian focus, Art Agenda, S.E.A. will forge mutually beneficial partnerships with other art-world players to expand its scope of coverage.


Zoe Butt (The Factory Contemporary Art Centre)

As a curator and writer committed to the building of critically thinking, culturally conscious, artistic communities, Zoe is currently Artistic Director of The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre. Previously she was Executive Director and Curator of Sàn Art, Vietnam’s then most active independent contemporary art space in Ho Chi Minh City. From 2007-2009 she was Director, International Programs, Long March Project, Beijing, China and from 2001-2007 she was Assistant Curator, Contemporary Asian Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia assisting the development of the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT); key acquisitions for the Contemporary Asian art collection, and other associated gallery programs. Her curatorial practice (exhibition making, institution-building, writing and consultative work) is pan-Asian, working with private collectors and researchers, independent curators and major museums globally. She has been published by Hatje Cantz, Germany; Art Review, London/Hong Kong; Art Asia Pacific, Hong Kong; Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco/Paris; Independent Curators International, New York; Lalit Kala Akademi, India; Artlink, Australia; Printed Projects, Ireland, JRP-Ringier, Zurich; Routledge, London; Sternberg Press, Berlin, amongst others. Zoe is a member of the Asian Art Council for the Solomon R. Guggenheim, NYC; a member of ‘Asia 21 Young Leaders’ of the Asia Society, NYC and in 2015 became a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.
