Ingeniously combining printing and drawing, illustration and fine art, artist Kenny Ng utilizes a variety of materials and techniques in his most recent painting series displayed in the exhibition ‘lamina | ink ‘(on view until 18 Nov) at The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre. In this workshop, artist Kenny Ng will give participants an insight into his creative process and share the relief printing technique that is used in one of his artworks: ‘Coat of Scales’.
For this workshop, participants will have a chance to practise this relief printing technique, led by Kenny Ng himself and have the opportunity be in conversation with the artist.
Applied widely in printmaking, this is a manual printing technique, which creates clear and strong colors on the paper. On the surface of the printing block, the relief areas will be matted with ink, leaving images, whereas the recessed areas of the printing plate will leave the paper ink-free. Such printing in relief has long existed in Vietnam, applied in many practices such as wood engraving, Đông Hồ folk painting, as well as seals on documents, paintings or ceramics in the old feudal period.
Kenny Ng grew up in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. He graduated with a degree in Visual Arts from the College of Art and Design, Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in the US, he returned to Vietnam to live and work in Ho Chi Minh City. Kenny’s artworks are often personal, abstract and poetic and have been exhibited by a number of institutions abroad such as: : ‘Kệ – A History of NOW’ (Wedeman Gallery, Newton, MA, 2017), ‘Spotlight On Book Arts’ (Lesley University, Cambridge, MA, 2016), ‘Sheffield International Artist Book Prize’ (Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, UK), etc
