As an artist, with a history in media production and film, Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn possesses a unique set of perspectives on culture and society that have been critically honed via various art projects realized locally and thus far predominantly staged abroad. In this artist talk, Tuấn will share his personal preoccupations with the concepts behind his solo exhibition ‘Empty Forest’, which continues a body of research examining the relationship between spiritual belief, material consumption and the socio-political attitudes inherently arising from the habits of ‘self-cultivation’ – one of the central tenets of traditional medicine in Vietnam. Fundamentally concerned with the destructive human disregard for its habitat, deeply aware of the dismissal of animal rights, Tuấn shall discuss his own methods and means of engaging this complex issue as an artist and citizen.
